National Science Foundation grant will fund upcoming seasons of Tumble en Español

Shake It Easy Media is proud to be part of ‘¡OYE Tumble!‘, a National Science Foundation grant that will fund 17 bilingual STEM podcasts of Tumble Science Podcast for Kids and its Spanish adaptation, Tumble en Español, for Latine families over a three-year period.

This initiative will foster science identity in children by sparking science-based family conversations in both English and Spanish. By partnering with Tumble Media and Florida International University, the project aims to bridge the gap in STEM education for underserved communities, especially for families where English is not the primary language.

The project’s senior leadership team includes Tumble Media’s Sara Robberson Lentz, Marshall Escamilla, and Lindsay Patterson. The team also includes Dr. Remy Dou, Associate Professor for the STEM Transformation Institute at Florida International University, and Nuria Net, CEO of Shake It Easy Media, who serves as executive producer of Tumble en Español.

Nuria’ leadership at Shake It Easy Media is crucial to ensuring that the podcasts reflect the cultural richness of the Latine community. Her experience in multilingual content creation will help make science accessible and engaging for young bilingual audiences.

‘I’m so proud to be part of this grant,’ said Nuria Net, who has a wealth of experience creating multilingual audio content highlighting US Latine culture. ‘This is incredibly important news not just for children’s podcasting but for Spanish-language podcasts in general. Not only will we be producing more seasons of Tumble en Español, but the research we gather from ¡OYE Tumble! will help us understand how bilingual STEM kids podcasts can strengthen science identity in US Latine families through family science talk.’

Through this collaboration, the project promises to support the next generation of bilingual STEM professionals by providing a unique space for Latine families to engage in science-related conversations at home.

In 2020, Tumble Media and Shake It Easy Media (previously La Coctelera Music) launched Tumble en Español, the first-ever Spanish adaptation of a children’s STEM podcast. It was an instant success, paving the way for more multilingual educational content. By offering high-quality, engaging science stories, Tumble en Español expanded its reach to Spanish-speaking families, creating a unique space for parents and children to learn about science together. The success of Tumble en Español demonstrated the potential of podcasts to strengthen science literacy in bilingual homes, making this new project, “¡OYE Tumble!”, a natural next step in supporting Latine families.

Shake It Easy Media and Nuria Net will attend Liber 24 to discuss the future of children’s audio

We are pleased to announce that Shake It Easy Media will be at the next Liber 24 conference, International Book Fair, with its founder: Nuria Net. The conference will take place on Wednesday, October 2nd in Barcelona.

Nuria Net, specialist in the production of children’s content in audio format, will participate in an important training session on ‘Expectations for the growth of children’s content in audio format’, organized by Dosdoce.com. This session will take place at 13.15 in Gran Via at the Fira de Barcelona.

Nuria will be joined by other recognized industry experts: Kiyeun Baek (Yoto), Geórgia Picanyol (Edebé) and Maribel Riaza (Storytel). Together they will offer a deep insight into the future of children’s audio sector. The session will be moderated by Javier Celaya, founding partner of Dosdoce.com.

This event is particularly relevant at a time when the childrens’ audio industry is experiencing rapid growth worldwide. Although in Spain and Latin America this category has developed more slowly than in other markets, the consumption of children’s audiobooks is expected to increase by 30% over the course of this decade, thanks to the rise of specialized listening devices such as Yoto and Tonies. These devices are transforming children’s access to audio content by providing a safe, friendly and entertaining listening experience.

Shake It Easy Media already has experience as co-producer with Tumble Media of Tumble en Español, a successful children’s science podcast that has captured the attention of mostly bilingual families in the United States interested in learning science and Spanish through accessible and entertaining content. This project is a reflection of Shake It Easy Media’s commitment to producing content that supports children’s cognitive and linguistic development, providing a comprehensive and entertaining educational experience.

In this way, Nuria Net and Shake It Easy Media continue to be pioneers in the creation of children’s audio content, demonstrating how audio can be a powerful tool for learning and entertainment. Don’t miss this opportunity to learn more about the future of children’s audio content at Liber 24!

Welcome to Las Cosmos!

We are thrilled to present our new project: Las Cosmos

In case you are wondering what this name means, it refers to a new generation of Latinos and Latinas who are smashing barriers, setting new trends and influencing both culture and society. A generation that is both cosmopolitan and Latine. In other words, a ‘Cosmolatine’ generation, the Cosmos generation.

That is why we have created a platform: to promote and connect the Cosmolatine generation, to celebrate, give a voice and unify these emerging -often women- talents who are not yet represented in the traditional media.

We have a mission. Las Cosmos aims to:

  • Create, grow and amplify our community so that we can reflect the cultural diversity of Spain and show this creative boom that the country is currently enjoying.
  • Bridge digital, generational and stereotype gaps that limit us as a society and so that we can shine together, both Spaniards and Cosmos.
  • Explore the different causes that move someone to migrate. Learn about the experiences behind it, their ambitions and how these new hybrid, multiple and beautiful identities have integrated into the lives of Spaniards.

In the coming months Las Cosmos will also be a video podcast where we will be chatting with Cosmolatine artists who are at the forefront of this new generation and movement. We look forward to sharing all this with you, and much more! Stay tuned!

Sold a Story en Español

The investigative podcast that is changing the way reading is taught in American schools is now available in Spanish.

An APM Reports podcast produced by Shake It Easy Media.

The APM Reports investigative podcast series “Sold a Story” has captivated audiences with its in-depth investigation of the flaws in conventional reading instruction methods in American schools. Hosted by acclaimed reporter Emily Hanford, the podcast has become a catalyst for school reform, inspiring over 15 states to revise their educational policies. In this Spanish version, a collaboration between APM Reports and Univision and produced by Shake It Easy Media, we summarize Hanford’s research and provide new information specifically for Latin audiences.

According to recent data, in the United States, half of Hispanic fourth-grade students struggle to read at a basic level, highlighting the urgent need for more effective instruction.

The first episode of “Sold a Story en español” is a condensed version of the six-episode podcast. It is hosted by journalist Valeria Fernández, who was particularly drawn to the project as she is in the process of choosing a school for her four-year-old son. This episode will also be available for free to U.S. public radio stations.

The second episode addresses the special challenges faced by Spanish-speaking families whose children are learning to read in English within the American educational system. Fernández and Hanford discuss questions parents can ask to determine how their child is being taught and ways to advocate for a child who is struggling. Hanford’s voice is dubbed in Spanish by Dominican actress Laura Gómez, known for her work on the Netflix series Orange Is the New Black.

Listen to “Sold a Story in English” on APM Reports.
