Shake It Easy Media has been nominated for the Ondas Globales del Podcast Awards!

We’ve got something to celebrate! Shake it Easy Media has been nominated for two awards in the third edition of the Ondas Globales del Podcast Awards: “Corinna and the King” in the category of Best International Foreign Language Podcast and “Extrema Catalunya”, as Best Podcast in Co-official Language of the State.

Corinna and the King/Corinna y el Rey” is a co-production with Project Brazen and PRX. An eight-episode series released in two languages: English and Spanish, and produced by a large international team. This narrative non-fiction podcast tells the true story of King Juan Carlos I, who abdicated the Spanish throne in 2014 after being the subject of a corruption investigation and further public scandal. At the epicenter of the scandal was Corinna zu Sayn-Wittengenstein: the king’s secret mistress. Corinna herself tells her story. An original soundtrack was composed and released for this podcast, and quite an unusual marketing campaign was developed for its promotion. It included the launch of a fake clothing brand, a perfume and a show in London that achieved huge media resonance.

Extrema Catalunya” is a documentary podcast produced for LA MIRA digital magazine, with the collaboration of the Department of Equality and Feminism of the Generalitat de Catalunya, the CRAI Library Pavilion of the Republic of the University of Barcelona and Catalunya Ràdio. In ten episodes, and with the help of photojournalist Jordi Borrás, we tell the history of the ultra-right movement in Catalonia, from the death of dictator Franco to the present day.

Both podcasts were produced in 2022 and 2023 under the name La Coctelera Music. We at Shake It Easy would like to thank our partners and co-producers for these nominations, and everyone who has been involved in the development of these projects. 

In the second edition of the Ondas in 2023 we received the award for Best Non-Spanish Speaking Podcast with “Punk in Translation“.

The Ondas Globales del Podcast Awards continue to grow. 1,252 applications were received from 19 different countries for this third annual ceremony. It showed a 40% increase in participation with respect to the first edition.

The Scientific Adventure Continues with Season 3 of “Tumble en Español”

 Shake It Easy Media and Tumble Media are pleased to announce the launch of Season 3 of Tumble en Español, a podcast for kids to be enjoyed by the whole family, about scientific discoveries. This new season, which premieres Friday April 5th is supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation. This podcast focuses on representation and accessibility in STEM fields,  by  featuring the stories of scientists who happen to be blind. 

Tumble en Español recognizes the importance of family interaction in children’s learning experiences. That’s why episodes are designed to encourage active participation, allowing children to share, learn, and listen alongside their families. 

“We recognize the challenges faced by students who are blind or have low vision in their pursuit of STEM professions, starting from early education,” says Nuria Net, founder of Shake It Easy Media and co-host of Tumble en Español along with Alvaro Ramos. “Existing prejudices often hinder the perception of these students and their teachers about the possibility of them becoming scientists or engineers.”

Tumble en Español, which has been rated 5 stars by Common Sense Media, is the Spanish adaptation of the popular children’s podcast Tumble Science Podcast for Kids, produced by Tumble Media. Shake It Easy Media, along with Tumble Media, have already had two successful seasons of this pioneering podcast in its category, as it was the first podcast for children adapted from English to Spanish in 2020.

“We’re so excited for this season of Tumble en Español,” says Lindsay Patterson, CEO of Tumble Media and executive producer of Tumble Science Podcast for Kids. “Tumble’s goal is to make high-quality science storytelling accessible for everyone, and we’re taking it to another level by sharing stories that highlight the importance of diversity and accessibility in science.”

This third season of Tumble in Spanish is funded as part of a National Science Foundation ITEST grant, focused on studying podcasts as a classroom tool to engage blind and low vision students. It is a collaboration between Tumble Media, Associated Universities Inc. (AUI), Oregon State University (OSU), and Independence Science., interviews with bioengineer Dr. Mona Minkara, oceanographer Dr. Amy Bower, linguist Dr. Robert Englebretson, the writer Andrew Leland & neuroscientist Dr. Simon Fischer-Baum, Trevor Attenberg, environmental scientist and educator, and Antoine “Yuma” Decaux, computer engineer.

Shake It Easy Media and Tumble Media launched Tumble en Español to explore the fascinating world of science, and provide fun and accessible tools for families who want to practice Spanish and connect with this language in an easy, dynamic, and fun way. Tumble en Español is committed to fostering a comprehensive approach to learning, which will undoubtedly be beneficial for children’s cognitive and linguistic development.

Introducing “Sold a Story en español”

APM Reports, the award-winning national investigative journalism division of MPR News, in partnership with Univision, is offering a Spanish translation of its groundbreaking podcast “Sold a Story.” Released today, “Sold a Story en español” is available on all podcast platforms and at soldastory.es. The podcast, produced in collaboration with Shake it Easy Media, will also go out to Univision listeners through its Uforia App, Uforia Podcasts YouTube channel and its main news podcast, Univision Noticias. 

Sold a Story has captivated audiences with its in-depth investigation into the flaws of conventional reading instruction methods in American schools. Hosted by acclaimed reporter Emily Hanford, the podcast has become a catalyst for reform, inspiring fifteen states and counting to revise their educational policies. 

“Sold a Story is about shedding light on a critical issue in education,” said Hanford. “Expanding into Spanish allows us to reach an even broader audience, including the millions of Spanish-speaking families who are directly impacted by the challenges we explore.” 

The statistics underscore the urgency of the podcast’s message. According to recent data, half of Hispanic fourth graders struggle to read at a basic level, highlighting the pressing need for more effective instruction. 

Episode one of “Sold a Story en español” is a condensed version of the six-episode podcast. It is hosted by bilingual journalist Valeria Fernández, who was especially drawn to the project because she is in the process of choosing a school for her four-year-old son. This episode will also be available for free to public radio stations.   

Episode two is about the special challenges facing Spanish-speaking families whose children are learning to read English at school. Fernández and Hanford discuss questions parents can ask to determine how their child is being taught and ways to advocate for a child who is struggling. Hanford’s voice is dubbed into Spanish by actress Laura Gómez, well-known for her work on the Netflix series Orange Is the New Black.

Nuria Net talks about the Latin Grammy 2023 in Sevilla

The Latin Grammy 2023 took place on November 16 in Sevilla, Spain. It was the first time the gala was held outside the United States. The transcontinental move sparked some controversy, especially among the Latinx community. Even going as far as questioning whether Spain should be part—or not—of the awards.

To address this ongoing debate, talk about the night’s big winners and how Latin music has not only crossed borders, but gone further, NPR reporter Miguel Macías spoke with our co-founder Nuria Net.

Why invest in podcasts? 4th annual Latino Podcast Listener Report

Monthly podcast listenership among Latinos increased by 52% since 2020, nearly four times faster than the rate among the general U.S. population, according to the fourth annual Latino Podcast Listener Report. The study showed that in 2023, 38% of U.S. Latinos age 18+ are monthly podcast listeners. A record high, compared to a 25% in 2020!

“Investing in Latino podcasts is about more than diversity, equity, and inclusion, it is also smart business decision. There are more Latino podcast listeners than ever, and they are interested in purchasing products from podcast advertisers, paying to subscribe to podcasts, and even buying merchandise from podcasts”

To demonstrate the power of podcasting in the Latino community, here we share some of the main findings of the 2023 report. First of all, there are 63.7 million Latinos in the U.S. and 31% have reported listening to a podcast in the last week.

  • 23% of U.S Latinos report listening to an English-Language podcast in the last week.
  • 13% of U.S Latinos report listening to an Spanish-Language podcast in the last week.

U.S. Latino weekly podcast listeners are highly engaged with podcast ads

  • 49% of U.S. Latino weekly podcast listeners age 18+ have ever purchased a product or service as a result of hearing an ad on a podcast.
  • 49% say they are more likely to purchase a product they heard advertised on a podcast compared to other places they hear ads.
  • 50% agree that their opinion of a company is more positive when they hear it mentioned on a podcast they regularly listen to.

Spanish-language and Latino-hosted podcasts connect with listeners

  • 53% of Latinos age 18+ who consume Spanish-language podcasts agree that ads on those podcasts are more relatable.
  • 46% are more likely to purchase from a brand that dvertises on a spanish language podcast.
  • 54% who consume Latino-hosted podcasts trust Latino podcast hosts.

“Punk in Translation” at the Ondas Podcast Awards

Last May 3rd, “Punk in Translation” won the award for Best Non-Spanish Speaking Podcast in the second edition of the Ondas Globales Podcast Awards.

A production made during the pandemic and with the help of an international team, between San Juan, Miami, Los Angeles, Mexico City, Madrid and Barcelona. Audible’s original series fulfilled its objective: to expose to the world the fundamental and pioneering role of many Latinas and Latinos in punk music, in the 60s and 70s. As Nuria Net, main producer and writer, would say, this is not a story about celebrities or famous people… it is the story of artists who went unnoticed at the time and to whom today, we pay homage.

“Punk in Translation” nominated for the Webby Awards

We had no idea it was going to happen… and then it did. Out of more than 14.000 entries from 70 countries around the world, “Punk in Translation” has been nominated for a People’s Voice Webby Awards for Best Documentary Podcast.

The Webby Awards are the main international awards that honor excellence on the Internet. The award is presented by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences (IADAS), an assessment body of more than 2,000 members. It is—as the New York Times would say—the Internet’s greatest honor. Winners in each category will be honored in an awards ceremony held in New York on May 15, 2023.
