Sold a Story en Español

The investigative podcast that is changing the way reading is taught in American schools is now available in Spanish.

An APM Reports podcast produced by Shake It Easy Media.

The APM Reports investigative podcast series “Sold a Story” has captivated audiences with its in-depth investigation of the flaws in conventional reading instruction methods in American schools. Hosted by acclaimed reporter Emily Hanford, the podcast has become a catalyst for school reform, inspiring over 15 states to revise their educational policies. In this Spanish version, a collaboration between APM Reports and Univision and produced by Shake It Easy Media, we summarize Hanford’s research and provide new information specifically for Latin audiences.

According to recent data, in the United States, half of Hispanic fourth-grade students struggle to read at a basic level, highlighting the urgent need for more effective instruction.

The first episode of “Sold a Story en español” is a condensed version of the six-episode podcast. It is hosted by journalist Valeria Fernández, who was particularly drawn to the project as she is in the process of choosing a school for her four-year-old son. This episode will also be available for free to U.S. public radio stations.

The second episode addresses the special challenges faced by Spanish-speaking families whose children are learning to read in English within the American educational system. Fernández and Hanford discuss questions parents can ask to determine how their child is being taught and ways to advocate for a child who is struggling. Hanford’s voice is dubbed in Spanish by Dominican actress Laura Gómez, known for her work on the Netflix series Orange Is the New Black.
